Swimmer's Ears: Danger From A Harmless Past time
By Leah Marie Dizon of Order Drugs Online
Swimming, splashing, playing on water may be fun, especially on hot days. However, these fun activities can be ruined by a condition called swimmer's ear, a condition in which bacteria grow in the ear canal and cause infection. It is called swimmer's ear because it is common in individuals who are into swimming. But it can also be developed because of other conditions. Swimmer's ear or inflammation of the middle ear (otitis media) is one of the most common pediatric ailments. Young children are particularly prone to otitis media as their Eustachian tubes, which regulate the pressure in the middle ear, have not yet fully developed. Swimmer's ear develops when the ear is exposed to inappropriate moisture or when water becomes trapped in the ear canal. The skin inside the ear may become soggy and reduce the acidity that prevents infection from occuring. Bacteria may also penetrate the skin through a cut in the lining of the ear. When this happens, bacteria, fungi, and other unwanted microorganisms from contaminated water or from objects placed in your ear can grow and cause a condition called swimmer's ear (acute otitis externa, or external otitis). Signs and symptoms of this condition may include pain and discomfort that may worsen when the earlobe or other part of the outer ear is touched. Chewing may also worsen pain and discomfort of swimmer's ear. Other symptoms can include itching, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and a yellowish or brownish discharge from the ear. Your ear canal may be swollen. In severe but rare cases, the outer ear can be red and swollen too. Treatment for swimmer's ear may include proper cleaning to prevent further irritation or other conditions. However, patients with this condition should not clean the inner ear unless instructed by doctors. Other treatments may include antibiotics and corticosteroids in topical or eardrop forms which fight infection and reduce itching and inflammation. Antibiotics are rarely prescribed by doctors for this condition because of the possibility of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. In addition to these treatments oral medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), over-the-counter pain medication, and other prescription drugs may be prescribed by doctors to reduce pain discomfort. Not swimming in dirty or polluted water is one precautions that can be done to prevent swimmer's ear from developing. When the ears are exposed to continual excessive moisture, many of the natural immune defences in the skin which line the ear canal are lost and, the ear becomes more susceptible to infection by bacteria. Not scratching or cleaning the inside of the ear with cotton swabs, bobby pins, your fingernails, or other objects may also help. Upon acquiring this condition, patients are advised to seek medical attention rather than self-medicate to prevent the development of other conditions like antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance develops because of improper use of antibiotics. Furthermore, understanding swimmer's ear is essential in preventing this condition from happening and the health complications that may be associated with it.
